UNDERSTANDING YOUR SYMPTOMS

What are the symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis?

Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory arthritis involving the spine’s joints and ligaments. Back or hip pain and stiffness are common, and other joints can be affected. Some people also develop eye, skin or bowel problems. Symptoms may fluctuate or persist, with different effects on mobility and everyday life. Assessment considers your history, examination and tests.

Back or hip pain

Pain and stiffness often involve the lower back or hips.

Stiffness after rest

Symptoms may feel worse after prolonged sitting or other periods of inactivity.

Nighttime discomfort

Back pain during the night can interrupt sleep or make resting difficult.

Other joint pain

Shoulders, knees, ribs or feet may also feel painful or stiff.

Fatigue

Feeling very tired may add another challenge beyond pain and stiffness.

Reduced flexibility

Spinal stiffness can make bending or moving in different directions harder.

Symptoms can have more than one cause, and experiences vary. A symptom list cannot tell you whether you have ankylosing spondylitis. A healthcare professional can assess your symptoms and decide which tests or follow-up are appropriate.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY, TOGETHER

Less to remember. More to talk about.

A symptom journal gives the day-to-day details of life with ankylosing spondylitis a place to go. With Jetty, you can talk or type about your symptoms and daily life while they’re still fresh.

Jetty keeps your health notes organized over time, helping you look back on changes and prepare the symptom history and questions you want to bring to your next appointment.

What to put in your symptom journal

Describe where you feel pain, how long stiffness lasts and what happens after rest or movement. Include interrupted sleep and tasks that felt difficult so the record goes beyond a pain score.

Keep questions about mobility, other joints and changes outside your back in one place. Jetty helps organize your account for discussion; it cannot assess spinal changes or identify disease activity.

Questions you might bring: How should we assess changes in my morning stiffness and night pain? Which symptoms outside my back should I report to the team?
